Westphal is bounded by Lake Major Road to the east and Main Street / Trunk 7 to the south. It falls within HRM District 4 (Cole Harbour–Preston–Westphal–Cherry Brook), which has a combined population of approximately 26,500 residents. Westphal provides many of the everyday services — grocery stores, gas stations, and medical clinics — that Port Wallace residents rely on.

Portobello

Portobello has a distinctly more rural and “cottage country” feel compared to the suburban communities to the south. It is one of the communities Port Wallace residents pass through when heading toward Waverley or Fall River.

Lake Loon was carved from Westphal as a distinct community in April 2011. It sits between Port Wallace and the more established Westphal area, with a quiet residential character and proximity to local lakes.

Direction: Southeast of Port Wallace
Character: Rural, historically significant

Cherry Brook is a predominantly African Canadian rural community with a heritage of small farms. Like Lake Loon, it was carved from Westphal in 2011. The community has deep historical roots and a strong sense of local identity.


Montague Gold Mines

Direction: Nearby, off Exit 14 on Highway 107 (~3 km from Dartmouth)
Character: Residential with industrial heritage

Named for gold discovered in 1863, Montague Gold Mines has a complex environmental legacy. Historic mining operations left behind contamination from arsenic and mercury. The Nova Scotia government initiated site closure proceedings in 2018 to address the contaminated areas. Today the community is primarily residential, but buyers should be aware of the area’s remediation history.

Montebello & Keystone Village

Direction: Along Waverley Road, near Port Wallace

Montebello and Keystone Village are among Dartmouth’s newer neighbourhoods, built along the Waverley Road corridor close to Port Wallace.
